We are very pleased to announce the second round of projects funded by the UTown @ UBC Community Animation Grants. Projects span from initiatives by UBC students, staff, faculty and members of the Musqueam community.
BioBuddies
Bugs, plants, fungi and seaweeds are just some of the few specimen students of Norma Rose Point Elementary will examine under microscope with help of Zoology and Botany students The project will span all across the community, from field trips to Spanish Banks, Pacific Spirit Park and walks around the neighbourhood. Kids involved will sure learn a thing, two or many about nature and biology.
UBC Farm for UBC Families
UBC Farm is coming to Acadia Park! Residents and families will get a chance to learn how to grow their own food (within their balconies or community gardens) through interactive workshops and events. UBC Pocket-Farm markets organized by the group will be a first at Acadia Park and offer fresh produce at nominal prices.
Connecting to Cedar: Cedar Weaving Evenings
Monday evenings at Musqueam Community Centre are Cedar Weaving Evenings. Participants are invited to learn and work on cedar weaving projects (such as bracelets, baskets, ropes) over conversations with friends, coffee, tea and snacks.
Main Mall Community Garden
Soon students from Faculty of Land and Food Systems, Forestry and Engineering will give you a chance to get your hands dirty and grow food right here at the upcoming community garden off of Main Mall. Not only will this project raise awareness about gardening and food security issues, but also aimate the space.
Musqueam Weaving – Warping a Loom
Master Musqueam weaver, Debra Sparrow will bring back to life a century-old loom at the Museum of Anthropology, as per Salish tradition to foster interaction between the UBC and Musqueam community. After the loom has been warped, community members will get to first-hand experience weaving a blanket.
Party Safari
Start your day with a Pre-work Yoga Rave and end with an Urban Dance Party! Party Safari is a day full of events aiming to reconcile fun and health. There is something planned for everyone, make sure to check this one out!
