It’s that time of year again! On behalf of the UTown@UBC Community Grants Committee, we are so pleased to announce that the following projects have been awarded grants of up to $1,000 to help build community on campus!

UBC Bike Rave: $1000 Aaron Bailey and Joshua Compagna

Grab a bike, and some glowsticks, pump up the music, and get ready to ride with hundreds of your closest friends at the UBC Bike Rave! A celebration of the vibrant cycling culture at UBC, this family-friendly event is back for a second year, and is open to cyclists of all ages. It will feature bikes decked out with speakers leading cyclists around the beautiful UBC Vancouver campus, stopping periodically to have mobile dance parties at designated spots.

UBC Relay for Life: $1000 Ameen Amanian and Amanda Wang

We’re thrilled to once again support this incredible cause. The UBC Relay for Life is a unique, empowering fundraiser that celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those lost and mobilizes communities across the country to fight back against cancer. March 7-8, grab some friends and neighbours, put together a team of 8-15 and run, walk or jog throughout the night to help UBC Relay for Life reach their $60,000 fundraising goal for the Canadian Cancer Society. A great event for a great cause!

Fitness Fun Bootcamp, $1000, Leonor von Baer

Get fit and have fun with Fitness Fun Bootcamp! This fun, FREE weekly bootcamp is the perfect way to meet your neighbours, make new friends and sweat out your stress! Classes take place each every Monday (excluding November 11) from 6-7 at the Marine Drive Ballroom. Want to find out more? The Internationals Choir, $1000, Sarit Aloni

Conducted by a UBC School of Music graduate student, The Internationals Choir brings together singers and performers from all around the world—Russia, Israel, Sweden, Japan, Chile, Norway, Peru and more—to share the music of different countries with the UTown@UBC community.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT), $1000, Jens Locher

UTown@UBC is proud to once again sponsor the Three Minute Thesis, an annual competition that asks graduate students to engage the university community in their hours and hours of research, by asking them to present it in just three minutes! A great way to connect with the incredible work being done by graduate and post-doctoral students on campus, 3MT is an annual highlight for many campus residents.

 UTown@UBC Line Dance Club, $500, Xiao Xia Wang

Kick up your heels, snap your fingers, and get ready to do the Electric Slide (or other line-dancing boogie), with the UTown@UBC Line Dance Club! This group is open to all UTown@UBC residents, regardless of age or level of dance skill. UTown@UBC Youth Documentary Project,  $1000, Dave Huang

And the Oscar goes to....UTown@UBC youth, channel your inner Spielberg or Moore, by joining the UTown@UBC Youth Documentary Project! Youth will be tackling documentary making from a youth perspective, with focus on issues that concern teens today. A screening of their first film will follow in the Spring, so keep an eye out for more information about when and where this will take place. The Green College Players Present Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, $1000, Tessa Cernik

The extremely talented Green College Players present Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, an award-winning play set in two time periods. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going to a charity chosen by cast members. Be sure to check back for the date, as it will certainly be another sold-out show!

CRAZI Youth Club, $1000, Della Chen

Have a passion for pop? Dedicated to dance? Then the CRAZI Youth Club is for you! Bringing together UTown@UBC Youth, CRAZI Youth Club provides them with the opportunity to pursue their interest in music and dance while making friends, gaining leadership skills and having fun.
