About

The second annual Lights at Lee Square Design Competition is open for original art or animation entries. If you missed last year’s competition, What Lights You Up?, this is your chance to express your creativity and have your art on display in the public realm for all to admire!

The winning designs will be selected by a judging panel and projected onto Money and Raymond M.C. Lee Square at UBC Vancouver campus. Lights at Lee Square features a permanently installed, overhead projection system that illuminates the ground outside of the UBC Bookstore with themed animation year round.

All winter long, stop by Lee Square after dusk to check out the winning and honourable mention entries from last year’s What Lights You Up? design competition.

This Year's Theme - Thrive Together

We invite you to create a design that inspires our community to Thrive Together, a theme that acknowledges the tough times from this year that have impacted the mental health of our community, and the experiences unique to each individual. This theme ties into Thrive at UBC, a time when we come together as a community to learn about, talk about, and explore ways to support our mental health and make it a year round pursuit.

You may find the following prompts useful to kickstart your creativity:

  • We all have mental health, and while it might look and feel different for each of us, we all benefit from maintaining and fostering it. How do you Thrive?
  • The Thrive 5+ are some of many ways to promote a healthy mind. How can your design help others explore ways to Thrive?
  • What do you want to share with others who are experiencing challenging times?
  • How can our community collectively support one another in learning to Thrive?
  • How can your design brighten someone else's day? What brightens your day?
