Winter 2016 UTown@UBC Community Grants

The UTown@UBC Community Grant Selection Committee is pleased to announce the projects that have been awarded Winter 2016 grants!

We are excited to award a total of $7,120 to eight great projects, from an intergenerational music class, to an endurance dance competition and more! Thank you to all who applied, and congratulations to all the recipients; we look forward to building community on campus with all of you.

Green Depot Education Video Series, Felix Mann, $670

Did you know the new Wesbrook Community Centre is home to its own community-led Green Depot? This series of short, instructional videos, produced and directed by a UTown@UBC youth, and translated into multiple languages with the aid of community members, will teach residents how to properly use this facility. Voices From All Around, Estefania Milla-Moreno, $1000

Following a very successful introduction in the fall, Voices From All Around will continue to celebrate and educate about some of the cultures that exist within our community through documentary films, panel discussions and sharing of traditional foods. Endurance Dance Challenge, Elenor Montibert, $1000

So you think you can dance? How about for hours and hours on end? The Endurance Dance Challenge, benefitting Free the Children wants you to pop, lock, boogie and twerk your way to victory, in the ultimate Dance-Off!

Bizhacks, Nguyen Yen Linh, $1000

Watch as teams of three to five students, across interdisciplinary faculties put their heads together in this invention marathon! Dealing with real world business issues, student programmers, designers, builders, entrepreneurs, and more will put their problem solving and creative skills to the test in a 24 hour business hackathon! We hope they have lots of coffee! 

Intergenerational Music Project, Jessica Clasen, $1000

This project brings together babies, parents, and seniors through a biweekly music program filled with singing, signing, and community building. Research shows that interactions between infants and seniors encourages infant development and socialization, decreases caregiver stress, and stimulates seniors.

UBC Powwow, Francine Burning, $1000

Last year, the First Nations Studies Student Association and the Indigenous Students Association held UBC’s first Powwow,  a First Nations ceremony that focuses on harnessing community by bringing people together to watch traditional dancing, hear powwow singers and drummers, eat good food and support artisan vendors. After a hugely successful first year, this wonderful event is back, to bring together the UBC and greater Vancouver community to engage in ceremony, celebration and dialogue.

UBC Intercultural Alliance Intercultural Fair, Payal Shah, $500

UTown@UBC is very proud to once again support the UBC Intercultural Alliance Fair! UBC is home to thousands of faculty, students, staff and residents from all around the world, and the UBC Intercultural Alliance invites the entire UBC community to celebrate these different cultures together. Music, food and performances will help bring together the cultural clubs across the UBC campus to foster intercultural understanding and promote cross-cultural collaboration. Greek Village Sustainability Project, Santiago Ayala Perez, $950

Working collaboratively the Greek Village will be launching an educational campaign to support and promote recycling and composting within the village, reducing environmental impact, and recording their findings.
