UTown@UBC Community Grants Recipients Spring 2018

We are excited to announce the recipients of UTown@UBC Community Grants Spring Cycle! Our diverse volunteer grants selection committee, made up of residents, faculty, students and staff members, chose 16 projects for funding this cycle. We look forward to seeing these projects enliven our community. 

Acadia Park Woodworking Workshops - $1000 

Building on the success of last year’s Community Grant project, From our Forest to our Community, Acadia Park residents are bringing back woodworking workshops to build six new picnic tables for their shared space.

The Dialogue Project - $1000 

This project offers community dialogues for first year UBC students on the topics of 'Healthy mental wellness while partying' and 'Rape culture and Sexual Abuse on Campus.

Malaysia Singapore Night - $700 

Savour a night of Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine & delicacies with special performances from UBC students!

Photo Voice: My New Chapter - $$1000 

My New Chapter is a photo exhibition that seeks to capture lived experiences of refugees and their challenges in resettlement and re-integration. Through visuals and interviews conducted by both the team and participants, it will explore the themes of the social determinants of health (SDOH) and its relation to mental health for refugees who make another country their new home.

Next Generation Golf - $1000 

Next Generation Golf is a youth-led project that aims to inspire students at Norma Rose Elementary School through the game of golf. Conducting through fun games, the program is set to teach chipping and putting, as well as the rules of golf.  It will also enhance participants’ abilities to be positive, focused, independent and patient as well.

Pachamama - $1000

Experience Ecuador through an evening filled with several performances showcasing Ecuadorian music, dances and traditions.

Parent Support Group - $1000 

A space for immigrant parents and children to meet peers and mental health professionals to support one another through challenges faced in their new lives in Canada.

Stress is a Choice - $500

In this workshop participants will learn easy and doable strategies to help release the stress response and guide them into relaxation and directly impact their lives and wellbeing.

Trot for Tots - $1000

Bring your friends and family to raise awareness about child poverty in BC, grab a free t-shirt, and play some carnival games! All profits go directly towards purchasing supplies for underprivileged children, as requested by local inner-city elementary schools!

UBC Fashion Week - $1000 

A week full of glitz, glam and fashion education. The theme of this year’s fashion week at UBC is multiculturalism and diversity. Meet the trailblazers of the fashion industry and participate in dialogue regarding critical topics of self-expression, identity, representation, and sustainability.

UBC Bike Rave - $1000

Prepare for an upbeat exploration of the UBC Campus with music and flashing lights you've never experienced. A mobile party with only the best beats, treats, lights, trikes, bikes, and hype.

UBC Boxing Club Tournament - $1000

Learn the basics of boxing with the UBC Boxing club in a fun way! Lessons will be led by experienced coaches and will each end with a community social for participants. At the end of the series of lessons, the club will organize a social to celebrate participant learnings!

Biobuddies - $1000 

UBC students take Norma Rose Point students on exciting and educational field trips including forest walks, bacterial cultures and strawberry DNA extractions, and pond dipping.

Wild Postcard Project - $1000

Founded in 2016, the Wild Postcard Project aims to increase awareness of biodiversity through artwork competitions for kids & teens in locations across the world. The winning artworks are converted into postcards, allowing local biodiversity – as depicted by artistically inclined youth – to be shared to all corners of the globe.

Youth TedX - $1000

A youth centered TEDx conference is coming to UBC that will showcase the talent and works of local youth leaders, with a focus on mental health. Led by Sehaj Hundal, one of leaders from our very own Utown@UBC Youth Leadership Group.

Community Meets - $410.86

This event aims to welcome the community to celebrate the accomplishments of Sprouts and Seedlings, both are 100% volunteer and student run organizations providing sustainably produced food options to the UBC student community.
