The UTown@UBC Community Grants program wishes to congratulate the following grant recipients:
Sharing Youth Experiences, Maria du Monceau and Daniela Welkner - $452
The Sharing Youth Experiences project is a collaboration between UTown@UBC youth and students at Ecole mixte Saint Charles Borromee, a school located an hour from Port au Prince, Haiti. The two youth groups are producing short films about growing up in their respective communities. The films focus on daily life at home and school.
Multicultural Family Resource Fair, Multicultural Family Resource Fair Organizing Committee - $900
The Multicultural Family Resource Fair is a local, informative, fun and inclusive community event that celebrates diversity and encourages learning. This year’s fair takes place on March 30, 2012 at the Acadia Park Commonsblock (10am – 12pm). The fair is an opportunity for UTown@UBC families to connect with other families, share knowledge, gain new skills and have fun together. To learn more click here
Building Bridges Through Storytelling, Hadas Diamant - $800
The Building Bridges Through Storytelling project aims to establish an inter-cultural storytelling program in UTown@UBC. The storytelling project will offer facilitated inter-cultural sessions focusing on diversity, friendship and compassion to parents of children aged 3 to 5. UBC Africa Awareness Week, Africa Awareness Initiative - $1000
The UBC Africa Awareness Week is an annual event that offers the UBC community an opportunity learn about Africa’s culture and history. The 2012 Africa Awareness Week took place in January and offered the UBC community lectures, panel discussions, cultural dance, a movie screening and an open mic night. To learn more click here
Canadian Social Studies Workshop, Florence Luo - $1000
The Canadian Social Studies Workshops, a project created by UTown@UBC resident Florence Luo, aims to help residents of UTown@UBC who are immigrants to Canada gain a better understanding of Canadian society through a series of workshops on Canadian history and culture. The workshops provide immigrants with opportunities to learn about Canada from UBC faculty, students and fellow UTown@UBC residents.To learn more click here
3MT - Bringing Research to the Community, Three Minute Thesis at UBC - $1000
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentation and communication skills by explaining their research in just 3 minutes, to a non-specialist audience. Open to the public and the entire UTown@UBC community this fun event is an excellent forum for learning about research at UBC. To learn more click here
Parent Learning Workshop Series, Angela Low - $1000
The Parent Learning Workshop Series will offer a series of facilitated workshops for parents in UTown@UBC to come together to learn about popular developmental theories and discuss how these theories can be transferred into everyday positive parenting practices. The workshops will be offered once a month and are open to all parents in UTown@UBC. To learn more click here
UTown@UBC Community Youth Band, Kerri Zhang - $1000
The UTown@UBC Community Youth Band is made up of UTown@UBC youth who are interested in music. The band is collaborating on a musical production of the Butterfly Lovers, a Chinese legend. The band is open to all youth in UTown@UBC (aged 12 and up) and rehearses Sunday evenings (5pm - 7pm) at the Old Barn Community Centre. The band is planning performances at senior’s centers as well as the UNA Barn Raising, Evening in the Park and Old Barn Talent Show. To learn more contact: justinwang1996@gmail.com
Midsummer Night's Dream at Green College, Green College Players - $1000
A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Green College is a full-length performance of Shakespeare’s delightful comedy being performed and produced by Green College Players, a theatrical troupe made up of residents of Green College. The performances are free and all audience members are encouraged to make a nominal donation or to contribute a non-perishable food item, which the College will then donate to the AMS/UBC Food Bank. Circle Painting at UBC, Khanh Nguyen and My Le - $1000
Circle Painting is a big, bold and fun community‐based, interactive art project where participants work together to create a large‐scale painting or mural by drawing circle patterns. The Circle Painting project aims to bring together hundreds of UTown@UBC residents to work on the same art masterpiece. The project will build networks between residents through creating colourful and visually captivating artworks based on the circle theme, a universal symbol everyone can relate to. Rent, Suite-Style Musical - $1000
Suite-Style Musical is a project run by students living in the suite-style residences on campus (Walter Gage, Marine Drive, Thunderbird, Fairview Crescent and Fraser Hall). Each year these students produce and perform a Broadway musical and this year the students are collaborating on a production of Rent, a rock musical set in the 1980’s in New York City.
