UTown@UBC Summer Sports Festival

Join in the summer fun and friendly competition while getting to know your community at the UTown@UBC Summer Sports Festival on Saturday, June 15th at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of free food, music and friendly competition! If you are familiar with the annual Faculty and Staff Sports Day or Gladiator Challenge organized by UBC REC, you won’t want to miss the UTown@UBC Summer Sports Festival!

From mental challenges like giant Jenga and Tangrams, to an inflatable obstacle course to relay races and more, the UTown@UBC Summer Sports Festival has something for everyone! Choose which team-based activities to participate in and test your mental and physical limits; activities are adapted for all ages, so everyone is welcome to participate!

Register online with a team of family, friends or neighbours or show up early on the day of the event. Signing up solo? We can put you into a team and give you the chance to get to know your neighbours!

The event will take place from 11am-2pm at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, and includes sports day activities,  free BBQ lunch, music, prizes and more!

Special thanks to our project partners, UBC REC, UBC Food Services, UBC Campus and Community Planning and the University Neighbourhoods Association.

Sample Activities:

Here are some sample activities that may take place at the UTown@UBC Summer Sports Festival!

  • Inflatable Obstacle Course: Bringing together the fun of a bouncy castle with the excitement of an obstacle course, this challenge will bring out the kid in everyone.
  • Memory Room: Pride yourself in having an amazing memory or an eye for detail? Both will be pushed to their limits as your team will be given a tray with specific items on it. Based on 6 visits to the Memory Room, can your team figure out the differences when compared to a photo?
  • Fun Fit Relay Race: In as short a time as possible, teams will be required to complete 4 different components in this relay race.
  • Laser Biathlon: Put your sharp-shooting to the test while keeping as calm as possible with the Laser Biathlon challenge. Participants will shoot, perform 30 step ups to increase their heart rate, then shoot again.
  • Wheelchair Basketball: Dribble, weave, pass, and wheel your way to the hoop! A little teamwork will go a long way as your team will compete head-to-head with another to show off your basketball skills.
  • Fantastic Food: How well do you know nutrition? This activity tests your team’s ability to identify different food options for a variety of dietary restrictions.
  • Roller Ball: This is not like the movie! In this challenge, teammates will need to communicate with each other and coordinate their movements to move a ball from one end of the course to the other.
  • Tangrams: Lots of colourful shapes, but can you figure out how they fit together? Sounds easy; however, these tangrams are challenging! This challenge is complete when teams have created all of the images assigned.
  • Giant Jenga: Following verbal instructions from their teammates, blindfolded team members must remove jenga blocks and stack them on top of the pile.
