UTown@UBC Neighbourhoods

Family Housing is located in five neighbourhoods in the UTown@UBC community: Hampton Place, Chancellor Place, Hawthorn Place, East Campus and Wesbrook Place.

Nearby shops, services, cultural and recreational facilities and amenities make it easy for students, faculty, staff and other residents to meet their daily needs without leaving campus, supporting UBC's vision for a sustainable community where peoplecan live, work and learn. Together, we are transforming UBC from a commuter campus, into a campus community!

The First UTown@UBC neighbourhood, Hampton Place officially opened in 1989. Enveloped by trees and greenery adjacent to Pacific Spirit Park, Hampton Place is where the UTown@UBC vision began, and it remains an important part of the community! Its 11 buildings house about 2,000 residents, including many families with children.

Chancellor Place Neighbourhood is located north of the Gage Residences and includes a range of housing for anyone who wants to live there, in duplex townhomes along Chancellor Boulevard, and apartment condominiums to the south. At its heart stands the historic granite Iona building, restored to its original grandeur.

Nestled between Wesbrook Mall and Acadia park, East Campus Neighbourhood provides a range of housing units, more than two-thirds of which are rentals. A large section of woods was preserved and roads were realigned to create pedestrian walkways, bike paths and parks. East Campus includes Greenwood Commons, as well as TRIUMF House, a guesthouse for visiting academics.

Hawthorn Place contains a range of housing, one-third of which is designated rental for faculty and staff. Hawthorn Place features an abundance of green space, including Jim Taylor Park, a pedestrian greenway that crosses the neighbourhood, community gardens, and Rhododendron Woods. It is also home to the beloved Old Barn Community Centre, a community hub, and gathering place for residents from across the campus.

The newest (and largest) UTown@UBC neighbourhood, Wesbrook Place contains a mix of townhouses and apartments for faculty, staff, and the general public, plus a new high school, a community centre (in development), six parks, and a commercial village. It is a showcase for sustainable development practices, including pedestrian-friendly greenstreets, pioneering stormwater systems, green roofs, and a major focus on walking and biking.

Several buildings, including Magnolia House, are designated as faculty and staff housing.

Wesbrook Village, in the heart of the the Wesbrook Place neighbourhood, is home to many amentities, including Save-on-Foods, a BC Liquor Store, restaurants, coffee shops and more!

The Wesbrook Place neighbourhood features many green spaces, making it a great place for kids to explore!

Innovative stormwater-management techniques are being employed in Wesbrook Place. Keep an eye out for beautiful and functional water features throughout the parks and greenspaces!

Land at UBC is never sold outright, but is leased to developers for 99 years, while remaining the property of UBC.
To date, land lease proceeds have contributed over $343 million to the UBC Endowment, funding research, academic development, scholarships and more!
Hampton Place, which opened in 1989, was the first UTown@UBC neighbourhood to be developed. Land lease proceeds from development contributed over $81 million to the UBC Endowment, which was used to match funds for academic development and awards including:
- The Peter Wall Institute
- Student awards
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Fund

UBC Properties Trust

In 1988, UBC Properties Trust was created to manage UBC's significant real estate assets, turning a dormant land asset into a source of funding for key academic projects!
